Flame retardant performance of PVC Compound

For PVC cable compound, in addition to good flame retardant performance, physical and mechanical properties and electrical properties should also meet the relevant indicators. In general, the flame retardant performance of cable compound is measured by oxygen index, where the oxygen index refers to the minimum oxygen concentration required in the combustion process of cable compound. The higher the oxygen index of the cable compound, the higher the flame retardant performance. Usually when the oxygen index reaches more than 30, the material has good flame retardant performance.

1. The effect of plasticizer amount on the flame retardant performance

When adding different types of plasticizer in the production of PVC cable compound, the smoke and flame retardant of cable compound is different. In general, the common plasticizer in PVC cable compound is dioctyl terephthalate, trioctyl trimarinate, tritoluene phosphate, etc. According to the relevant scientific research shows that the higher the proportion of plasticizer in the cable material, the lower the oxygen index of the cable material itself, basically different types of plasticizer decline speed is almost the same. In the study of the smoke release of cable compound, the smoke content increases with the increase of plasticizer in cable compound.  But for the phosphate-containing plasticizer and trioctyl trimenate, it has a strengthening effect on the smoke suppression performance of PVC cable compound.

2. The effect of flame retardant amount on the flame retardant performance

Adding inorganic flame retardant to PVC cable compound can effectively improve the flame retardant performance. Under a certain amount, the increase of Sb203 will lead to a straight rise in the limit oxygen index of cable compound, in other words, the higher the content of Sb203, the better the flame retardant performance. However, the actual research shows that sb203 has no decisive effect on the increase of oxygen index when added to a certain proportion, and it needs to be combined with other flame retardants to achieve higher oxygen index. For example, the addition of Sb2O3/ZB/Mg(OH)2 compound flame retardant will have a greater impact on the oxygen index of high flame retardant PVC materials.

3. Effect of high flame retardancy on other properties of PVC

.

With the increase of plasticizer and flame retardant, the mechanical and electrical properties of PVC compound will decrease. The effect is relatively slight for PVC material with LOI lower than 34, but for product with LOI higher than 36, the decrease of mechanical and electrical properties is obvious. Therefore, when making insulation products, we need to pay attention to the appropriate proportion of each component in the formula, so as to achieve the optimal comprehensive performance and meet the use requirements of the cable.

To sum up, combined with the current production and research of flame retardant PVC cable compound in China, plasticizers and flame retardants will greatly affect the performance of the cable compound itself,  The staff should strictly abide by the process flow in the production activities. Starting from the kneading treatment and plasticizing granulation of cable material, the dosage of plasticizer and flame retardant should be rationally allocated to improve the performance of cable compound.
