1. Introduction

Magnesium hydroxide is both a product and an intermediate material in the factory. As a product, it has many uses, among which the large consumption and the remarkable use effect are mainly in below two fields. First, as an inorganic additive non-toxic flame retardant, it has various properties such as flame retardant, smoke elimination, drip resistance, filling, etc.; Second, it is used in the field of environmental protection. As an environmentally friendly product, due to its excellent performance, it has occupied the first place in the consumption of magnesium hydroxide. 

Magnesium hydroxide has strong adsorption capacity and high activity, especially for the slurry product, which has the characteristics of non-precipitation, non-coagulation, good fluidity, easy pumping and storage, convenient to use, adjustment and control, etc. It can be used for acid containing neutralization of wastewater, heavy metal removal, flue gas desulfurization, land acid rain treatment and pH adjustment, etc. Compared with many alkalis, it not only has many advantages in technology, but also with low cost, convenient operation and safe use. Therefore, the application prospect of magnesium hydroxide is extremely optimistic. Some people abroad call magnesium hydroxide a “green and safe neutralizer”.

In addition, magnesium hydroxide can be used as a compounding component of new oilfield mud materials in oil exploration, and has some applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, cigarette paper smoke suppression coatings and magnetic material processing.

2. The applications of magnesium hydroxide

2.1 Treatment of acid-containing wastewater

Magnesium hydroxide is a weak base, and the slurry-like magnesium hydroxide has the advantages of non-precipitation and non-fluidity, and convenient to use and adjustment. The weak alkalinity of magnesium hydroxide makes it have unique buffering and neutralizing capabilities. The particles produced by neutralization have a fast sedimentation speed and are easy to filter. Moreover, it has strong adsorption capacity, high activity and low corrosiveness. These advantages enable magnesium hydroxide to reduce operating procedures, time and equipment investment in the process of treatment of acid-containing wastewater.

2.2 Flue gas desulfurization

Air pollution mainly comes from the exhaust gas produced by combustion. Most of the waste gas, especially the waste gas produced by burning coal, contains a large amount of sulfur dioxide. The magnesium hydroxide slurry product is relatively effective in the flue gas desulfurization, the by-products can be recycled and also have higher economic benefits.

2.3 Land acid rain treatment

Acid rain is rain, snow or other forms of precipitation with a pH of less than 5.6. During the formation and fall of rain and snow, they absorb and dissolve substances such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the air, forming acidic precipitation with a pH lower than 5.6. Acid rain is mainly caused by man-made emission of large amounts of acidic substances into the atmosphere. Magnesium hydroxide effectively helps on the pH adjustment and deal with the sulfur dioxide of the land acid rain.

Consequently, the sludge sediment volume is reduced and the disposal cost is reduced.

2.6 Heavy metal remover

Due to the large specific surface area and strong adsorption force of magnesium hydroxide, it is easy to adsorb and remove heavy metal ions that are harmful to the environment from various industrial waste liquids. Magnesium hydroxide can be used alone or in combination with lime, bentonite, etc. As a heavy metal remover, a Japanese patent reviews the uniqueness of using magnesium hydroxide in detail, and points out that it has unparalleled advantages over calcium hydroxide treatment.
